Please tell me about your current role at HDE.
I am a software engineer working in the team that develops the messaging security related service. The service is part of the HDE One services. My role in the team is to develop new features and also maintain the current service.
Besides that, I am also a member of the bureau of Information Security Promotion Committee (ISMS Bureau). As a member of the ISMS Bureau, we are tasked to assess the risk of assets, provide related education and perform internal audit within our division.
I am also involved in recruiting for our division (CPRD) where my tasks include interviewing the candidates and maintaining our challenge systems.
As a member of HDE, what is the most exciting part of your current position?
The most exciting part of my current position is that at HDE, we are allowed to make mistakes, learn from the mistakes then share what we’ve learnt with others. This gives us the freedom to try and experiment something new and improve ourselves everyday. It helps us grow not only as an engineer but also as a member of HDE. Another exciting part is that we are surrounded by brilliant people who are very generous in sharing their knowledge with others within the company.
What kind of culture does HDE have?
HDE has a open-minded and diverse culture. In order to expand, the company opened its doors to people from different countries and backgrounds. In the company, ideas and opinions from everyone matters and will be taken seriously. The company also embraces change. For example, it shifted its business to cloud-based services and made English as official language, etc all within the past several years.
Please tell me about your dreams, ambitions or hope for the future at HDE or in life.
As a developer I dream about having unlimited resources to play and build things with cutting edge technologies. As a member of society, I hope can have a job that allows me to maintain a good balance between work, family, and social contribution.
What type of people would you want to work with?
I want to work with someone who is willing to learn, share knowledge and grow together. I think having an environment that encourage learning is very important for company and individual growth. The most important element to create this kind of environment is the people.
What is it like for you to live in Tokyo?
Japan is a very safe and convenient country to live in. I’ve never worried about my own safety here. It has a very advance public transportation system and we can get to places easily without having to own a vehicle. Morning rush hour can be stressful, but since HDE provides “flextime” system, we can avoid the rush hour when commuting to work.
What does "Liberation of Technology" mean to you?
As a software developer “Liberation of Technology” means that we have the freedom to learn, experiment, and explore new technologies while contributing what we’ve learnt back to the company.
“Libre” also means free and open-source to me personally. As our work also depend on other open-source softwares, we are encouraged by the company to contribute back to the community in any form we can, e.g. sending code patches, help organizing meet-ups or conferences, etc.
